1987 - Otto du Plessis Pass. The following description of this pass (also known as "Saalboom Pass") between Clifford and Ida in the Eastern Cape was obtained from the website of "Mountain Passes of South Africa": "The word spectacular could describe this pass perfectly. It has all the elements a classic gravel road pass of intrigue, danger, views and technical driving. This pass is in the top 10 of 'most altitude gained' with a walloping 639 vertical meters gained! This was also our number 1 pass in the Eastern Cape. It's a humdinger! Note that this pass is not suitable for normal cars. You will need a "bakkie" with good ground clearance + diff lock or a proper 4x4. Even soft-roader type 4x4's will struggle on this pass."Β
